Johor Bahru Traditional Bakery

Small well-known bakery

Nowadays, it is hard to find a traditional bakery. Well, Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscult Factory is a good example for traditional bakery. This famous bakery located near city square, so it has attracted a lot of Singaporean tourists in addition of local people. The bakery opens at the morning and sold out at afternoon. And it closes at Sunday.

What make this bakery so special? Well, it is due to their traditional baking method. Once you step in the shop, you will see a big brick built, wood fire used old style oven. This bakery has been established since 1919 and the owner insists to use this traditional oven to bake the fragrant breads and cakes. You can see a warm picture from this family business: all three generations are busy to make the breads and cakes. This hand made cakes and breads plus the old style oven produce a quality food and good reputation. A lot of tv shows and news paper had visit this bakery.

Brick-built, wood fire used oven. The empty trays shown how much breads and cakes they have done for half day.

If you wanna find certain flavour bread, you have to ask the salesman there. I can't read the label on it.

The wall was full of  the articles which reported this bakery's  glory history.

The most popular bread is their coconut bun. While you eating the bun, you can smell there that is slightly charcoal smell, I think this is attributed by the oven. The coconut bun consists of fresh coconut shreds which has acceptable sweetness. It won't be too sweet and the bun is just fluffy. If really want to find out the flaw, I think the coconut shreds can be put more.

Another popular cake is the banana cake! A lot of people will come here and buy their banana cake. The responds and comments are good.

Besides, there are selling peanut bun ( for me, it is normal only), butter bun, otak, kaya, custard, sausage, red bean, curry potato and so on. The bun normally is RM3. One pack consist of 5 buns and it depends on the flavor. The banana cake is RM8.

The opposite shop is a chinese traditional cafe. It is well-known too. So bring your bread and cake go there to have cup of coffee!
